Why we love it
Uncover the diverse flora, fauna and formations of the Gawler Ranges National Park, from salt pans to mountains, gorges and the spectacular Organ Pipes., Spend two evenings at the Scotdesco Aboriginal Community, learn about the history of the settlement and what life looks like today, and keep an eye out for southern hairy-nosed wombats!, Visit the Head of Bight, home to dazzling sand dunes, towering limestone cliffs, and often frequented by southern right whales who use the bight as a breeding ground., Marvel at the pink and blue hues of Lake Macdonnell, watch the locals catch waves at the surf mecca of Cactus Beach and chill out in the laidback seaside town of Streaky Bay., Experience a working oyster farm with a local farmer, including a hands-on shucking lesson, and taste the freshest oysters you’ve ever tasted, straight out of the water!, By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Country Needs People. Donations help them support Indigenous land and sea management in Australia. Intrepid will double your impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
Is this trip right for me?
This trip includes time spent travelling in a private vehicle with your group. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. It’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.

Important information
IMPORTANT: ALTERNATIVE ITINERARY
Due to operational reasons, the departure on 27th December 2024 (trip code PZSE241227) will operate on an alternative itinerary:
- Instead of staying 2 nights at the Scotdesco Aboriginal Community and 1 night at a hotel in Streaky Bay you will be staying 1 night at a hotel in Ceduna, and 2 nights in Streaky Bay.
- The trip will not be visiting the Head of Bight. Considering that there won’t be any whales off the coast (as the whale season is over), the extremely long drive from Ceduna to the Head of Bight and then return to Streaky Bay as a day trip is not feasible and doesn’t add value. Instead, you will be visiting additional locations along the spectacular coast south of Ceduna.
- Some inclusions may be visited on alternative days.
START & END TIME & LOCATION
The trip starts in Adelaide with a Welcome Meeting at 8 am on Day 1 at our joining point hotel, and finishes back in Adelaide on Day 9 at our finish point hotel around 6pm. Accommodation is not included on this day but can be booked on request.
SINGLE SUPPLEMENT
A Single Supplement can be booked if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip, subject to availability. This does not include Days 4 and 5 in Bookabie where you will be matched up with travellers of the same gender. If a single cabin is available for these nights, you may be able to pay locally to have your own accommodation.
What to bring/pack
Below are some essential items for this trip. Please review the ‘Climate and Seasonal Information’ to ensure you pack appropriately for the weather at the time of year you are travelling.
- Lightweight clothing. You will need to bring a mixture of lightweight clothing and layers. Long shirts and pants are useful to protect against the harsh Australian sun. Clothes should be easy to wash and dry. Maybe bring a change of smart clothes for dinner in larger cities. Australia is pretty casual, shorts or a skirt and a top, with sandals, is our usual warm weather wardrobe.
- Comfortable, closed-in shoes. These will help to protect your feet from cuts and scratches when walking through bush/grasslands and will act as a protective barrier in the rare case of a bite or sting. A pair of sandals or thongs/flip flops are great for the beach.
- Sun protection. Wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses.
VALUABLES
Try to avoid bringing unnecessary valuables and use your hotel safe. It’s also a good idea to purchase a money belt or pouch that is easily hidden. We strongly recommend that you photocopy all important documents e.g. air tickets, passport, vaccination certificate, etc. and keep the copies separate from the originals. While not valid, a photocopy makes it much easier to obtain replacements if necessary.

Accommodations
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only and may change. On some occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our preferred accommodation. In these cases, we will use a similar standard of accommodation.
Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However, this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination or on some trips, have use of shared day rooms until all rooms are available.
