Overview

Discover the stories of the past with a visit to SLO CAL’s many historic attractions and museums. For history buffs, SLO CAL is a dream. Two beautifully preserved missions—Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa and Mission San Miguel—entice visitors to learn about the early days of California, Spanish missionaries, Native Americans and the intersections of these groups. In Nipomo, the hidden gem of the Dana Adobe engages travelers with its 130 acres of peaceful, preserved land. The adobe, a California Historic Landmark, and its surrounding land showcase the history, heritage and culture of the county’s rancho era. Both Arroyo Grande and San Luis Obispo offer a glimpse of the past with well-preserved houses and gardens. In Arroyo Grande, a house and garden displays collections of period clothing, photograph and kitchen items. Likewise, a house and garden in San Luis Obispo transports guests to the Victorian days with its careful renovation and original furnishings. San Simeon boasts a unique window into history with the great estate of Hearst Castle. Built by art collector and newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, Hearst Castle features not only a vast collection of primarily European art, but stunning Mediterranean Revival architecture and gardens as well. Every room transfers visitors to a bygone lifestyle. Several museums emphasize other aspects of history. A museum in Paso Robles focuses on the restoration and preservation of military aircraft, military vehicles and memorabilia. A railroad museum in San Luis Obispo preserves the railroad history of California and the Central Coast, and a small historical museum in Templeton houses local memorabilia and photographs.

The arts aren’t reserved for special occasions or for a select few in SLO CAL. Here, they’re part of everyday life, accessible to all. Discover art galleries tucked into the heart of downtowns throughout the county. On the first Friday of the month, celebrate art at the free Art After Dark event in San Luis Obispo. More than 20 galleries and non-traditional art venues—restaurants, boutiques, salons—spotlight the best of established and emerging local artists. Paso Robles hosts a similar event the first Saturday of the month. If that’s not enough to get your creative juices flowing, stroll through area art museums that house galleries of fine art and crafts. At Hearst Castle, the county’s crown jewel, admire the extensive fine art collection of famed publisher William Randolph Hearst. Performing arts enthusiasts will uncover a vast array of options as well, from regional melodrama performances and the symphony to national and international artists performing on campus at Cal Poly. Even the youngest set can get in on the arts and culture action in SLO CAL with learn-through-play experiences at neighborhood children’s museums.

Field of Lights

Field of Lights

Featured in The New York Times as #6 in “50 Places to Visit in 2020,” Light at Sensorio features two installations by internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro. Field of Light is a 15-acre walk-through experience, Munro’s largest artwork to date, comprised of more than 58,800 stemmed spheres lit by fiber optics, gently illuminating the landscape in subtle blooms of morphing color that describe the undulating landscape. Our latest installation, Light Towers celebrates Paso Robles’ extensive wine country environs, featuring 69 towers composed of more than 17,000 wine bottles, illuminated with glowing optic fibers whose colors morph to an inspiring musical score. Powered by solar, these stunning exhibits captivate visitors, inviting them to engage with the landscape and environment through an ethereal light based and sculptural experience. Smithsonian Magazine has called Munro’s art “stunning,” while The Guardian noted “This is art you feel, rather than art you view.”
