8 days

Skiathos
Skiathos - Skopelos
Alonissos - Peristera - Kyra Panagia
Skopelos - Skiathos

Day 1: Skiathos

Kalimera! Welcome to Greece. Your adventure begins in Skiathos – a gorgeous island in the Aegan Sea and part of the Sporades archipelago. Best known for its beaches and nightlife, it’s recommended you arrive a couple of days early if you’d like to explore all the island has to offer. You’ll meet your small group and local skipper at 4.30 pm at Fregio Gelateria in the marina before boarding your private catamaran – your home for the next week. Tonight, perhaps have dinner at a local taverna, enjoying the local Greek hospitality and deliciously fresh food, getting to know your fellow travellers.

Day 2: Skiathos - Skopelos

Embrace an early start this morning to explore the remote parts of the island in the north, like Elia, Aselinos and Ligaries Beach. Take stand-up paddleboards out into the crystal-clear waters and soak up the gorgeous coastal landscape in the sunshine. Then, your skipper will take you back to the land for a short exploration, followed by lunch on the boat. Sail to Skopelos Island, heading east into more remote and seldom explored parts of the archipelago. Along the way, why not get an introduction to sailing from your skipper or relax on the catamaran forward net – often, there will be dolphins and seals swimming and playing around you as the marine park is just a few nautical miles away! Depending on the group’s desires, you might also stop in Neo Klima and Loutraki to explore. As you arrive in Skopelos, sail past the iconic church of Agios Ioannis, which was made famous by Mamma Mia, then spend the night rocking gently with the waves.

Day 3-6: Alonissos - Peristera - Kyra Panagia

Over the next few days, the National Marine Park of the Sporades will be at your doorstep. Take a refreshing morning swim off the side of the boat before breakfast, then cast east towards Alonissos, Peristera and the Kyra Panagia area.

In Alonissos, life seems to slow down as you drop anchor. Swim in the blue waters and let the peaceful surroundings wash over you. Look for the elusive Mediterranean monk seal and the many dolphins that call this park home. Visit Alonissos Old Town and explore on foot or by taxi, seeking hilltop views.

Peristera Island, famous for its vibrant sea life, dunes and the tallest lighthouse in Europe, offers the perfect stand-up paddleboard opportunities. You can also go snorkelling or head out for a quiet dinghy ride with your skipper. In the evening, maybe head to the local Piano Bar, which offers live music during the summer, and grab dinner at one of the little tavernas above the local supermarket. This might just be some of the most mouthwatering Greek cuisine you’ll ever have! During your time here, your skipper will connect you with the local team of volunteers at Patitiri village who work for Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal. This society is focused on protecting the monk seals in the area, and you can learn about the international marine research projects here.

Heading north beyond Patitiri, you’ll visit Kyra Panayia – a secluded island, far removed from the usual tourist routes. It’s the most remote destination that you can reach during a week-long journey from Skiathos. Glide in Planitis Bay – with no mobile signal, you have the rare opportunity to disconnect completely – and maybe go stand-up paddleboarding in the calm waters. This haven is inhabited only by a handful of monks and the occasional fisherman, making it an incredible spot to enjoy a night beneath a canopy of stars.

You’ll then return south, maybe stopping by Kyra Panagia Bay for lunch. Here, you can also climb the 100 steps to the monastery of Kyra Panagia. Then, head to Steni Vala in Alonissos – a quiet and picturesque spot where you’ll spend the night.

Day 7: Skopelos - Skiathos

Wake up with the sun this morning and sail to your final destination – the island of Skiathos. Along the way, stop in Panormos Bay on Skopelos Island – an emerald-green haven just 16 km from Skiathos Town. You might also have time to visit Koukounaries Beach, just a short sail from the town. Renowned as one of the most picturesque beaches in the area, it’s the perfect place to soak up the sun and savour your final moments by the sea with a glass of wine. After, you’ll arrive back in Skiathos port between 4 and 5 pm. Wander the winding streets of Skiathos Town and end the day with a delicious local feast at a traditional Greek taverna, raising a glass to an incredible sailing adventure.

Day 8: Skiathos

With no further activities planned, your trip comes to an end this morning and you’re free to disembark and make your way off the island. If you’re extending your stay and need help with additional accommodation, just get in touch with your booking agent ahead of time.

Is this trip right for you

The majority of this trip takes place on a sailing boat and need to feel comfortable moving about the vessel, including the use of stairs. With that said, sea legs come naturally to some but not so much for others – it's recommended that you bring sea sickness medication just in case.

Our yachts have a small Zodiac on board, used to transport travellers to shore if we need to anchor in the bay. However, we will most often overnight in the small marinas on each island we visit, so the Zodiacs aren’t used. Zodiacs can sometimes be awkward to climb in and out of, but a sense of humour and a can-do attitude are all you need.

This is an adventure on board a real yacht, which means living spaces, cabins, bathrooms and showers need to be shared with other passengers. Sleeping quarters can be quite compact, but you will be spending the majority of your time above board in the open air.

Time on the water also means time in the sun. Remember to pack sun protection, such as sunscreen and a hat, and drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. See ‘Essential Trip Information’ below for a full packing list.

Please note that smooth sailing is dependent on the weather, so itinerary changes may occur at the last minute if the weather becomes unfavourable. If any changes are made, you can trust in your knowledgeable skipper to choose an alternative route or activity.

Why we love it

Set sail on a comfortable catamaran yacht with your experienced skipper navigating the route, and an onboard host who will prepare breakfast and lunch each day., Feast on delicious traditional food at local tavernas during your free evenings on the islands – if there’s one thing other than the sun and sand that Greece is known for, it’s the fresh cuisine., Sail past the iconic church of Agios Ioannis, which was made famous by Mamma Mia, during your sail to the remote parts of the archipelago., Observe the elusive Mediterranean monk seal and the many dolphins that call the National Marine Park of Sporades home – as you relax in the catamaran’s onboard net, the dolphins may be swimming beside you!, Swim, stand-up paddleboard and snorkel as you balance lively port towns with remote islands, where only a handful of fisherman or monks wander.

Group leader

On this trip you will be accompanied by one of our skippers. Your skipper's role involves taking charge of the sailing, the safety of the vessel and safety for all passengers on board. Skippers all hold a Yacht Master Offshore license or higher and have completed an intense training and review process before sailing with us. They are also fully qualified in CPR and First Aid. The aim of the skipper is also to take the hassle out of your travels by organizing the overall operation and smooth-running of the trip, managing trip logistics and coordinating the kitty (where applicable). Your skipper will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect skippers to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects.

On this trip you will also be accompanied by an Intrepid host who will be preparing breakfast everyday and light lunches when indicated on the itinerary.

Safety

Many national governments provide a regularly updated advice service on safety issues involved with international travel. We recommend that you check your government's advice for their latest travel information before departure and ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all areas your itinerary covers. Please refer to our website's safety page for links to major travel advisories and updates on safety issues affecting our trip.

We strongly recommend the use of a neck wallet or money belt while travelling, for the safe-keeping of your passport, air tickets, cash and other valuable items. Leave your valuable jewellery at home - you won't need it while travelling. Many of our hotels have safety deposit boxes, which is the most secure way of storing your valuables. A lock is recommended for securing your luggage.

Your leader will accompany you on all included activities, however during your trip you'll have some free time to pursue your own interests, relax and take it easy or explore at your leisure. While your leader will assist you with the available options in a given location, please note that any optional activities you undertake are not part of your itinerary, and we make no representations about the safety of the activity or the standard of the operators running them. Please use your own good judgement when selecting an activity in your free time. Please also note that your Leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the trip itinerary if it's deemed necessary due to safety concerns., WATER SAFETY AT SEA:
Travellers that are able and confident swimmers will be able to enjoy swimming & snorkelling off the boat, but please always note the skipper's advice and instructions on when and where to swim and what precautions to consider. Travellers who are not able to swim are certainly welcome on this trip, but you will be required to wear a life jacket when we are sailing., LIFE JACKETS:
A life jacket is provided on all sailing trips , ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION:
Alcohol abuse will not be tolerated onboard for safety reasons. The availability and consumption of alcohol on our sailing trips will be up to the skipper's discretion.

Visas

PASSPORT
You’ll need a valid passport to travel internationally and most countries require your passport to have a minimum of 6 months validity, so remember to check the expiry date.

We need your passport information to get everything ready for your trip so it’s important that the information on your booking matches your passport exactly. Please take care to provide the correct details. We recommend carrying a copy of the photo page of your passport while travelling and leaving a copy at home with family or friends.

VISAS & ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Many countries require a visa and obtaining the correct visa for your trip and any countries you may transit through is your responsibility. We recommend you check your visa requirements as soon as you have booked your trip. This will ensure you have time to prepare your documents and for your visa application to be processed. You can check the entry requirements for your nationality on your government's foreign travel advisories, consular websites or on our page here:  www.intrepidtravel.com/visa-entry-requirements

Health

GENERAL HEALTH
All travellers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully on this trip. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell prior to travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements.

When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. Please note that if in the assessment of our group leader or local representative a traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund.

You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or for any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements.

CPAP Machines:
If you are travelling with a CPAP machine on our Europe sailing trips, please note that there is a 220V socket in each cabin on most boats. These sockets only work when we are connected to shore power and is only available at some of the ports that we visit. Sometimes shore power sockets are interrupted causing a trip of the supply or is not available at all. We cannot guarantee power for the whole trip so we recommend that you bring a back-up battery (or two). If you are travelling by yourself, you will need to pay a single supplement to limit disruption to other passengers.

Food and dietary requirements

Money matters

SPENDING MONEY
When it comes to spending money on the trip, every traveller is a little different. You know your spending habits better than we do, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals, drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry. Make sure you have read the itinerary and inclusions thoroughly so you know what is included in the trip price and what you may need to pay for while travelling.

EUROPE
The Euro (EUR) is the official currency in the following destinations: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain. All other European countries still have their own national currencies.

You can use your credit/debit card in ATMs, which are common throughout Europe. You can obtain EUR cash prior to arriving through normal outlets such as banks and currency exchange offices.

TIPPING
Tipping can be an appropriate way to recognise great service when travelling. While it may not be customary in your home country, it is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many of our destinations and is greatly appreciated by the people who take care of you during your travels. It is always best to avoid tipping with coins, very small denomination notes, or dirty and ripped notes, as this can be regarded as an insult rather than the goodwill gesture it is intended to be.

YOUR SKIPPER
You may consider tipping your skipper for outstanding service throughout your trip. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however, as a guideline, EUR 8 – 10 per person per day, can be used. Of course, you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length and involvement of your skipper on your trip.

YOUR HOST
You may consider tipping your host onboard for outstanding service throughout your trip. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however, as a guideline, EUR 8 – 10 per person per day, can be used. Of course, you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length and involvement of your host on your trip.

CONTINGENCY FUNDS
We try to plan for every eventuality, but there are still some things beyond our control. We reserve the right to change an itinerary after departure due to local circumstances or a Force Majeure Event. In such emergency circumstances, the additional cost of any necessary itinerary alterations will be covered by you. Please note we are not responsible for any incidental expenses that may be incurred as a result of the change of itineraries including but not limited to visas, vaccinations or non-refundable flights. Make sure you have access to an extra US$500 for emergencies (e.g. severe weather, natural disasters, civil unrest) or other events that result in unavoidable changes to the itinerary (e.g. transport strikes or cancellations, airport closures). Sometimes these things necessitate last-minute changes to enable our trips to continue to run, and as a result, there may be some extra costs involved. The recommended amount is listed in USD for the relatability of universal travellers, however, local currency may be needed once in the country to cover these costs.

What to take

SUGGESTED PACKING LIST
Space on board the vessel is very limited - for your own comfort and safety, luggage should be kept to an absolute minimum. The use of a backpack, soft sports bag or duffle bag is recommended - we highly recommend you do not travel with a hard suitcase. If you are travelling with a larger bag or suitcase you can leave these bags at your hotel [usually for a small fee]. This is only applicable if you are returning to the same hotel at the end of the trip, if you aren't, it will be your own responsibility to make your own way back to collect your luggage. If you are leaving a bag at a hotel or in a locker do not leave cash, credit cards, passports or any irreplaceable belongings behind.

Please ensure you travel with all required medicines, pain killers and toiletries that you may need while in on this sailing trip. You are travelling to quite a remote destination and will not have immediate access to pharmacies and even then they may not stock your required medication.

Special Items required for this trip
- There are many opportunities for snorkelling during this trip. Diving masks, snorkels and fins are provided onboard the yacht and are for use by all passengers. Some passengers choose to bring their own, however this is a personal choice.
- Beach towels are not provided so you will need to bring your own.

Climate and seasonal

HOT WEATHER
Summer temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius, which can be uncomfortable for those not used to the heat. Please consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.

A couple of rules

Intrepid won't tolerate any kind of violence, harassment (whether physical, verbal or sexual), or disrespect toward fellow travellers, our teams or local communities.

To ensure the wellbeing of everyone on the trip, decisions made by your group leader are final.

Romantic relationships between travellers and group leader or local representative are not permitted while on trip.

Any behaviour that prevents your leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines may result in Intrepid denying your booking or removing you from the trip.

If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your group leader immediately. Alternatively, you can contact us on the emergency contact number detailed in the Problems and Emergency Contact Information section of this Essential Trip Information.

Accommodation notes

ACCOMMODATION ON BOARD THE YACHT
This trip is accommodated entirely on board a catamaran yacht of between 44ft to 46ft. The catamaran is equipped with a mixture of 2 x double cabins, 2 x triple bunk cabins which all have ensuite bathrooms. Our boats are real yachts and this is a real sailing trip. Yachts are designed to keep sleeping areas to the absolute minimum of space, while maximising common areas as much as possible.

Single passengers will be paired up with other passengers of the same gender in a triple share cabin. If you’d prefer not to share a cabin, you can choose to book a double cabin with a single supplement. The single cabin supplement is available at an additional charge. Everyone including the skipper shares the bathrooms on board.

While not everyone may feel entirely comfortable living in such close quarters, those who are looking to revel in the adventure and exhilaration of an authentic sailing trip usually find any discomfort from cramped living conditions is more than made up for by the whole experience.

ADDITIONAL ACCOMMODATION:
Please note that the majority of our sailing trips start and/or finish at a marina or port. For most of our destinations, we can provide transfers between the airport/hotel and the port/marina. Please check the joining and finish point information in the trip notes for details.

ELECTRICITY:
While there should be electricity on board throughout your trip the voltage is likely to vary widely, from 12V to 220V, and when in port or moored we are dependent on the supply available. Please be aware that the supply may not be sufficient to power some electronic devices all the time and that you may need a voltage adapter or similar (such as portable inverter used in cars). On some trips it may be possible to charge devices ashore at restaurants or resorts, however this is not guaranteed.

Transport notes

We use a catamaran yacht between 44ft and 46 ft which comfortably sleeps 10 customers. All bathrooms have hot water, and there is air conditioning in all cabins and common areas. You can sleep well on memory foam mattresses and enjoy a good cup of coffee in the morning from the yacht’s coffee machine. High speed internet with limitless data and a music system onboard the yacht will keep you entertained. There is a fully equipped galley kitchen, and you will be accompanied by an Intrepid host who will prepare breakfasts and light lunches each day. For all your adventure activities you will have the use of snorkeling equipment, 2 stand-up paddleboards and some noodles to help you kick back and relax while in the water.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips for those travelling internationally. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses, including emergency repatriation. If you are travelling within your home country or region, please confirm before travel that you are entitled to access the public medical system easily should an accident occur. We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international trips, you will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number has been sighted by your group leader or local representative.

If you have credit card insurance, your group leader or local representative will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number, rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country.

For travellers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or the USA, the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However, the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and each country you visit may have its own specific entry requirements. For example, some mandate travel health insurance for all foreign travellers, regardless of their nationality. Travellers from the European Union, Switzerland or the USA who decline travel insurance when travelling outside their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognizing personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise.

For assistance with travel insurance or other services, please visit the link below:

https://www.intrepidtravel.com/booking-resources/our-services

Many insurance companies will only cover you on a sailing trip if you are within a certain distance off the coast.  Noted below are the maximum distances (nautical miles) we travel off shore in Europe:
Amalfi: 7 NM
Sardinia: 2 NM
France: 3NM
Greece: 9NM
Croatia: 5NM
Montenegro: 7NM

Your fellow travellers

As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group - patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone's travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don't keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well - this takes just a little effort on your part. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure.

The bonus of our sailing adventures are that they are small groups, a maximum of 8 - 11 travellers (with the average number of travellers 7). However when you add in a Skipper and a host and the fact you will be eating, sleeping and lounging about together for up to 8 days in the confines of a real sailing yacht you may need to call on some patience, maybe some headphones but above all a sense of humour.
Most travellers come away from our sailing adventures saying it was a trip of a lifetime and that they have made lifelong friends..............we're sure you will too!

If you wish to have a single cabin on our sailing trips, please advise at the time of booking. A single supplement will be charged to have your own cabin.

Itinerary disclaimer

ITINERARY CHANGES
Our itineraries are updated regularly throughout the year based on customer feedback and to reflect the current situation in each destination. The information included in this Essential Trip Information may therefore differ from when you first booked your trip. It's important that you review this information prior to travel so that you have the latest updates. Due to weather, local conditions, transport schedules, public holidays, political unrest or other factors, further changes may be necessary to your itinerary once in-country. Your group leader or local representative will keep you up to date with any such changes once your trip is underway and has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the trip itinerary if deemed necessary due to safety concerns.

For sailing trips the itinerary will be subject to change depending on weather conditions. Your skipper will make the final decision to ensure safety at all times. Generally daily sailing time would not exceed 6 hours.

Please note that we will endeavour to sail at all times but there may be times during the trip that we will use the sails and motor or just the motor.

During the summer months in Europe, we are unable to pre-book a mooring berth at the marinas. Therefore, depending on availability, the place we stay the night may not be as per the advertised itinerary.
