Itinerary
Bienvenidos! Welcome to Ecuador, a country full of culture and natural wonder. Kick off your adventure as you connect with your Local Leader at a welcome meeting this evening. Afterward, head out for dinner at a local restaurant. (d)
*Please note, Club Adventures and Girl Scouts cannot guarantee that any departure will be exclusively female.
We’ll join our leader today to explore the old town in Quito. We’ll admire the famed Basílica and stroll down to La Compañia before reaching La Ronda, one of Quito’s most popular neighborhoods. We’ll get a breathtaking vista of the city from El Panecillo viewpoint.
Afterward, the "middle of the world" awaits us! We’ll head north of the city to the Middle of the World monument, built during the 17th century when a French expedition defined the location of the equatorial line. Be sure to take a photo with one foot on either hemisphere! Explore the Intiñan Museum where you can get hands-on with experiments that prove you are indeed at the middle of the earth. (b)
Art and culture await us today! We will travel out of the city to Otavalo, home to one of the biggest Indigenous markets in all of South America. Meet the local women artisans and explore their handicrafts. Be sure to try some leaf-wrapped cheese and local biscuits! Afterward, we will head to Peguche to visit a community weaving co-op to learn more about the traditional Ecuadorian weaving techniques from local women. On our way back to Quito, we will make a stop at a rose plantation before returning to our hotel. Join your Girl Scout host for a "Dessert and Chat" to enjoy some local sweets and bond with your fellow travelers! (b)
The Galapagos Islands is our destination today! We’ll say goodbye to our Quito Local Leader as we board our flight to Santa Cruz Island, where our naturalist guide will be awaiting our arrival. We’ll start our island adventure with a visit to a locally-owned ranch where giant tortoises roam free. We’ll walk the trails and appreciate these majestic animals in their natural habitat, which will surely be a highlight of our time here. Afterward, we’ll make our way to the hotel to settle in and explore the town. (b)
Today we’ll travel to Bartolomé Island, which is known for its distinctive pinnacle rock. We’ll walk along a wooded trail to the top of this once-active volcano, taking in the different lava formations, before being rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view of Santiago Island’s Sullivan Bay. As we continue, be sure to keep an eye out for Darwin’s finches perched on the lava cacti! Afterward, we’ll hop into a zodiac and ride around the island to meet the cheeky Galapagos penguins. We’ll disembark at a local beach to enjoy some snorkeling where sea turtles, white tip reef shark, and sea lions can all be viewed. We’ll return to our hotel in Puerto Ayora late this afternoon. (b, l)
*Island subject to change. Island may be substituted with a visit to Seymour Island or Santa Fe Island. Inclusions still include land/snorkeling excursions, wildlife viewing and included lunch.
This morning we’ll visit the Charles Darwin Research Station. The visitor center and museum house a whole range of information about the conservation efforts being made to preserve the unique ecosystem of the islands. Afterward, a two-hour cruise will provide opportunities to see marine life while en route to San Cristobal Island. This afternoon, we’ll go snorkeling at La Loberia—a white sandy beach with sun-bathing sea lions and sea turtles. (b)
Enjoy one of the most amazing experiences in the Galapagos: the iconic Kicker Rock (or, Leon Dormido)—a volcanic cone, eroded by the sea. Snorkeling here is spectacular with opportunities to spot the rare hammerhead shark. The afternoon is yours to relax and explore the island, and meet some locals. (b, l)
A full day trip to the southern island of Española provides us with the opportunity to partake in a hike to see albatross and Nazca boobies. Afterward, cool off with some snorkeling in Gardner Bay. Upon our return to San Cristobal, we’ll gather once more for our Girl Scout closing ceremony on the beach. Surrounded by the colors of the setting, we’ll connect with nature and reflect on the amazing adventure we’ve had together. We’ll toast to our adventure and lifelong friends made. (b, l, d)
During a visit to the Interpretation Centre this morning, we’ll learn about the geological, human, and natural history of the Galapagos Islands. Then we’ll transfer back to Quito for our last night together. (b)
Our adventure ends today with an included transfer to the airport. (b)

Things to know before traveling to Ecuador and Galápagos
The currency in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands is the US dollar (USD). ATMs are widely available in major towns and cities across Latin America. Credit cards are generally available in tourist shops and restaurants. Visa and MasterCard are generally preferred over American Express, Diners, etc. Smaller venues take cash only. Note that many places will not accept torn bills or bills that are not in good shape.
Please note that prices for food and beverages in the Galapagos are generally more expensive than Ecuador mainland and other parts of South America.
ALTITUDE SICKNESS:
Parts of your trip go above 2800 meters / 9200 feet where it is common for travelers to experience some adverse health effects due to the altitude - regardless of your age, gender and fitness. It even happened to Sir Edmund Hillary!
Before your trip:
Some pre-existing medical conditions are known to severely worsen at high altitude and be difficult to adequately treat on the ground, leading to more serious consequences. It is imperative that you discuss your pre-existing medical condition/s with your doctor. We understand certain medications are reported to aid acclimatizing to high altitude. Please discuss these options with your doctor.
During your trip:
While our Local Leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you are aware of the cause and effects of travelling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly.
MOSQUITO BORN ILLNESSES:
Some regions of Central & South America can experience outbreaks of dengue fever. There is no vaccination against it, but there are preventative measures that you can take such as wearing long clothing, using repellent and being indoors particularly around dusk and dawn. If you have a fever or feel unwell, please let your leader know right away. Protect yourself against mosquito-borne illnesses such as malaria by taking measures to avoid insect bites.
ZIKA VIRUS:
There have been reports of transmission of the mosquito-borne Zika virus in this region and we advise all travelers to protect themselves from mosquito bites. Given possible transmission of the disease to unborn babies, and taking a very cautious approach, we recommend all women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant to consult with their doctors before booking their trip.
YELLOW FEVER:
A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. It's also quite common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate on your arrival back home.
SEA SICKNESS:
Please note that on occasions the water can be rougher than usual. Consequently travel times will be longer than usual. If you suffer from seasickness you may want to reconsider travelling during this period.
Being located on the equator, Ecuador is a year round destination. In Quito temperatures do not fluctuate that much throughout the year with average temperatures around 66°F to 75°F during the day with lows of 48-50°F in the evening. There are two 'seasons', the wet and dry. The dry season runs from June to September and the wet season is from October through to May. The surprising thing with Quito is its altitude and proximity to the equator means that the sun has a little more kick to it so it can feel like it's warmer than it actually is. Even on cooler days, if the sun comes out make sure you use sunscreen.
The Galapagos weather is pretty reasonable all year round, so it is never freezing cold but it can get very hot [February-May being the hottest months]. The seasons are not exactly fixed and weather conditions are changeable around the ends of the seasons. Note that the "wet" season is still drier than many places in the world.
Daily temperatures range from 70°F to 77°F with overnight temperatures dropping to around 50°F. Up in the highlands it is cooler and the garúa mist hangs about as a kind of permanent dampness, and sometimes descends to the coast as well.
The waters surrounding the Galapagos are influenced by the Humboldt Current. Water temperatures sit around 68°F to 75°F from January through to May and drop to 65°F to 68°F from June through to October. Although you may be required to wear a wetsuit at this time of year the same currents that bring the cooler water temperatures also bring nutrients which means wildlife are very active at this time of year.
Please let us know your diet requirements before your trip starts. Generally speaking, in bigger cities/towns vegetarians can expect a reasonable range of vegetarian venues and/or vegetarian options within tourist restaurant menus. However, vegetarianism is not the norm in this part of the world so options can be limited when eating at homestays, small local restaurants, street stalls, markets, etc.
More restrictive diet requirements (vegans, coeliac, gluten intolerance, fructose intolerance, lactose intolerance etc.) can also be accommodated along this trip but you should expect a lesser variety than what you can expect at home. We recommend that, if possible, to bring your own supply of snacks with you.
Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it’s important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Your consultant will also be happy to point you in the right direction with acquiring visas. Visas can take several weeks to process, so familiarize yourself with any requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for processing time.
